In this post I am going to show you how to make instgram reels like pro quickly and easily, because there's been some major updates in what you can actually do in the instagram app to create reels , And there's also one very important setting that most people miss that's really killing the quality of the videos they're uploading.
But don't worry i a going to be taking you through it all step by step.
1. Best Settings for High-Quality Instagram Reels
So, you want to first off go ahead and open up the Instagram app. And then we're going to adjust this upload setting to make sure we're uploading at the highest quality possible.
Step by Step do like this:
- We want to hit on your profile picture down the bottom right hand corner.
- Then we want to come up to the settings Hamburger (Top Three lines).
- Let's scroll a long way down until we get to where it says Media quality .
- You'll see a option like Upload at highest quality .
- Turn It to " On "
By default, this is not enabled, meaning that it's going to be compressing and lowering the quality of videos when you upload them.
So , we want to make sure that we are enabling this so that we are uploading at highest quality first.
2. How to Start Creating an Instagram Reel
Now, from there, this is where we go to creating our reel.
So let's come back to our main Instagram home screen.
Access Reel Creation Area
We can access reel creation area a couple of ways.
We can press the plus button down the bottom middle.
Then we can choose reel from the bottom right hand corner.
You can see we have got:
- Post
- Story
- Reel
- Live
We want to press on Reel.
Select Files From Device
That's then going to prompt us to where we can select the files that we want to use that are already on our device.
So if we have already recorded stuff, that could be how you might want to start it.
Or if you cancel out of that now.
3. Instagram Reels In-App Camera Features
Now let’s explore the Instagram Reels in-app camera features.
First, go back to the Instagram home screen. From there, simply swipe to the left, and this will open the Instagram camera. At the bottom of the screen, select Reel to make sure you are in the correct section for creating reels.
Once you open the Reels camera, Instagram gives you many useful options to record your reel directly inside the app.
Countdown Timer :
One useful feature is the countdown timer. Before recording, you can choose a timer option from the top section. Instagram provides options like:
- None
- 3 seconds
- 5 seconds
- 10 seconds
This feature is very helpful if you want to place your phone on a tripod and move into position before recording starts. Just set the timer, press record, and get ready. You can see the timer option in the image below.
Speed Control :
Next, Instagram gives you speed control options.
By default, the speed is set to 1x, which means normal recording speed. If you click on it, you can change the speed based on your needs.
For example, you can:
- Slow down the recording
- Speed up the recording
- Create slow-motion style videos
This is useful when creating creative or cinematic reels. As shown in the image below, Instagram provides multiple speed options.
Flash Option :
Instagram also gives a flash option inside the Reels camera.
You can easily turn the flash ON or OFF depending on your lighting conditions. This can help if you are recording in a darker environment.
Filters and Recording Settings :
On the side of the screen, you will also find additional recording settings and filters.
These options allow you to:
- Apply filters
- Adjust recording settings
- Improve visual appearance
This helps make your reel look more attractive directly inside Instagram without needing external editing.
Music Option :
Another useful feature is the music option.
If you want to record reels with music, Instagram allows you to add audio directly from its music library. You can choose trending songs or other audio tracks while recording.
This is especially useful for creating engaging reels that follow current trends.
4. How to Record Your Reel
Let's just come back to none.
So that's the key camera settings and everything in here.
When You Are Ready to Record
When we are ready to record, we can just press and hold on center button.
Then the recording starts.
- We can see that we have that count up timer happening
- With the circle ⭕ rotating down the bottom
- Showing us how long we have left
Zoom In and Zoom Out
If u swipe up, we can actually zoom in and out by moving our thumb up and down on that screen.
So, you do have the ability to:
- Zoom in
- Zoom out
If you are holding in the record button.
Stop Recording
Once we let go, that's when the recording is stopped.
You can see how much progress bar that we have filled up.
So we can see we still have all this remaining time.
Continue Recording
If you want to shoot some more, we can just press and hold on the record button.
And we can now continue that recording.
Undo Recording
If we step back we want to undo anything, you can press the undo button and it will step back.
- It will just do one by one
- It's not going to remove everything by hitting undo
- It will just step back that most recent piece
5. How to Add Photos and Videos from your camera Roll
Add Media from Gallery
But we also have the ability to not just record from the camera.
We can also use the little button down the bottom to bring in any images or videos from our phone as well, as shown in the image below.
Trim Your Clips
So if we select any scene, we can trim this.
We can adjust the start. We can adjust the end if we need to.
Again, we got things like speed control and music and all of that stuff in here too.
But we can also do that very soon.
Build Your Reel
Let's hit next to bring this in.
And you will see that that's filled out the next little chunk of this circle as well.
So now we have 3 clips. Two that we recorded and one that was from my phone's gallery.
So the idea is that we are building out our story over time with either the camera, the stuff already on our device, or a combination of both.
6. How to Edit Reels (Editing Interface)
And then we can hit next to further refine everything.
Now the reel starts playing back and previewing what we have done so far.
You can see the playback across the bottom along with multiple menu options that help customize the reel.
Advanced Editing Mode
All of these menu items are shortcuts that open the advanced edit mode.
If we tap any icon at the bottom or press the edit video button in the bottom left corner, both will open the same editing screen.
We also get the timeline view.
Think of it like a simple version of CapCut.
You can see all of your clips in the timeline on different layers.
We can pick any clip and adjust the order.
We can also trim them down.
Trim and Rearrange Clips
If we tap on a clip, you can see yellow handles appear.
We can adjust the start time or the end time of the clips to make everything fit properly.
You can also add extra clips if needed to build your story better.
7. How to Add B-roll and Overlay Videos to Your Reel
We also have more options at the bottom for adding extra things to the reel.
If we want to bring in extra B-roll, overlay footage, graphics, or anything else, we have the overlay option.
Add Overlay Clips
If we press overlay, Instagram will ask us to pick a clip from our phone.
Once selected, the clip gets added over the video.
We can scale it up, make it full screen, or keep it smaller like picture-in-picture.
Adjust Overlay Position
We can move the clip around and resize it based on how we want it to appear.
Instagram also shows guidelines while moving clips.
These markers help us understand safe areas so important content does not get hidden behind menu buttons like comments, likes, and other options.
Once everything looks good, hit done.
Now that clip becomes a separate layer in the timeline.
We can tap it, move it, and adjust timing.
So while the main video is playing, the overlay clip can appear on top and then disappear later.
This makes it very easy to add extra clips either as overlay or directly into the main timeline.
8. How to Add Text and Audio on Reels
We can also easily add things like stickers.
You can see the stickers option at the bottom, and this includes many of the same things available in Instagram Stories.
So stickers, GIFs, captions, and similar elements can be added from there.
Add Text
If we want to add text, there is an option for text.
Let's go back to the start and press on that.
We can type anything we want.
For example, we can create a simple name card.
We can scale it up or down.
We can move it anywhere.
We can pinch to zoom and rotate it as well.
Customize Text
If we want to change how the text looks, we can customize fonts and colors. There are also preset styles and animations available. So we can fully customize the text to match the style we want. Once happy with the text, hit done. Now the text appears as its own layer in the timeline. We can move it around and adjust when it appears.
We can also change the start time and end time so it only shows during specific parts of the reel.
If we want to edit it again, just tap on it and use the edit option.
Add Audio
There is also an option to add audio.
So if we want to add music from Instagram’s library or from our own device, we can do that easily.
We can also import audio from a video file saved on our phone.
9. How to Add Automatic Captions (AI Generated)
We are not limited to adding only text. Instagram also gives us the option to add AI generated captions.
Generate Captions
If we press on captions, Instagram starts transcribing the audio automatically. It listens to the audio and converts speech into captions.
After processing, the captions appear on the video.
Edit Captions
We can edit the captions and change how they look. We can also move them to a better position if needed.
Once everything looks good, hit done.
Now captions will appear on the video while the reel plays.
10. How to Add Voiceovers and Apply Filters
If we scroll across the options, we also get the voice over feature.
This is useful if you already have clips added and want to record narration later.
Add Voiceovers
You can record a voice over directly on your reel. So if you want to explain something or add extra narration after recording, this makes it easy.
This works well when you want to add your voice after arranging all clips.
Apply Filters
We also get access to filters and different looks. So we can change the overall appearance of the reel. If we double tap on a filter, we can also adjust its strength.
This gives more control over how strong or subtle the effect looks.
We can make small adjustments to colors and improve the final look of the reel. Once everything looks good, hit done.
You can see how easy it is to edit reels directly inside Instagram.
11. How to Choose a Cover Image and Grid Preview
When we are happy with the reel and ready to post, press the blue button in the top right corner.
This opens the final setup page.
Choose Cover Image
The first thing I suggest is selecting the cover image.
Press on edit cover.
Then choose a frame from your reel that looks attractive and can grab attention. A good cover image can help improve clicks and views.
You can also choose an image from your camera roll if you already created a custom cover.
Profile Grid Preview
At the top, we also get the profile grid option.
This lets us preview how the reel will look on our Instagram profile grid. We can pinch to zoom and adjust how it appears. This helps make sure the cover looks clean on your profile as well.
Once satisfied, hit done.
12. How to Add Captions, Tag People and Schedule Reels
This is where you add all the final details before posting your reel.
Add Captions
You can write your caption and describe what your video is about.
Add anything important that your viewers should know. You can also include extra information if needed.
Tag People and Location
Below that, we get options to tag people and add location. These can help with reach.
They make it easier for other people to discover your reel based on tagged accounts or locations.
AI Label and Audience Settings
There is also an option to mention if your content uses AI generated content.
If you are using AI content, you should enable the AI label. We can also choose who can view the reel.
The default setting is everyone.
But you can also choose close friends or specific people.
Extra Posting Options
If you have a Threads or Facebook account linked, you can also choose to post the reel there. You can even share it to your Instagram story.
Under more options, we get extra settings like:
- Tag products
- Tag brands
- Add fundraiser
- Paid partnership label
Schedule Reels
We also have the option to schedule reels instead of posting immediately.
This means you can select a specific date and time for publishing. This is useful if you want to plan content in advance. You can also adjust upload quality settings if needed. Once everything is ready, hit next and your reel will be posted.
