Instagram SEO Isn't What You Think
I've seen so many Instagram creators stuck at 500 to maybe a thousand views per reel.
They post consistently, but nothing seems to break them out of that dead zone.
Then they make one small change and suddenly they're hitting 20,000 or even 50,000 views.
And it's not just views.
Those views turn into sales, signups, and whatever goal they have with their content.
The Truth About Instagram SEO
Now, this whole thing is not because they got lucky and it's not because the algorithm suddenly started to like them.
It's because of Instagram SEO, but not the kind most creators talk about.
Most creators think Instagram SEO means spamming hashtags or adding keywords everywhere in captions.
That's not SEO.
That's spam.
And eventually the algorithm will punish that.
Real SEO is a hidden system built into Instagram that tells you what content to make.
And if you use it the right way, the algorithm doesn't just push your account inside Instagram.
It can even help you show up outside Instagram, like on Google search.
SEO Is More Than Growth
I still don't think of SEO as just a growth hack.
For me and my clients, it's market research first.
SEO shows the exact problems your audience is already typing into search.
That means it's basically giving you the scripts that can get views from people who actually want what you offer.
Not random views from trending audio.
Without THIS Setting You Won't Rank
So let's talk about optimization first.
Because if you skip this, all the research in the world won't help much.
Turn On Search Engine Visibility
The first step is making sure Instagram allows your content to appear outside the app.
Go into settings, privacy, and turn on allow public photos and videos to appear in search engines.
If this is off, your reels will never show up on Google.
You might think this is a small thing.
But it's actually not.
One of my clients didn't even know this setting existed.
We told him to turn it on, and things changed within days.
His reels started showing for searches like home workout for beginners on Google.
The traffic from Google gave Instagram enough data to push the reel internally too.
So don’t ignore this setting.
It matters a lot.
Optimizing Your Content
The second thing is captions.
This is where most people either get lazy or fall into the spam trap.
Write Search-Friendly Captions
The goal is not to stuff hashtags or keywords everywhere.
The goal is to write captions using the language your audience is already searching for.
A quick way to do this is by using answerthepublic.com or even TikTok search.
Type in your topic.
Go broad.
For example, meal prep.
You’ll see real phrases people search for like meal prep lunch ideas or meal prep breakfast.
Use Keywords Naturally
Now the important part.
Use that keyword in the first line of your caption.
Then explain things using your own words and style.
Use those keywords naturally throughout the caption.
Don’t just dump 20 keywords at the end.
That is spam.
A lot of people still do this.
It may work sometimes, but it’s not a good long-term strategy.
Don't Spam Keywords & Hashtags. Instead do this...
Now here’s the part that makes this so powerful.
Use the exact search phrase you found and turn it into a hashtag.
For example, meal prep becomes #mealprep.
Use Keywords Naturally
Let’s look at a real example.
There’s a reel with 37 million views ranking for meal prep search.
The caption doesn’t feel spammy at all.
It reads like a normal story.
But if you look closely, the keyword meal prep or similar words appear again and again.
Meal prep, scale up your meal prep recipes, meal prepping machine, meal prep recipes.
The term appears multiple times naturally throughout the caption.
Not keyword stuffing at the bottom.
Just natural repetition inside real sentences.
That’s the difference.
Use Targeted Hashtags
Now look at the hashtags.
#mealprep
#mealpreprecipes
#slowcookermealprep
Notice the pattern.
Not 30 random hashtags.
Just focused hashtags based on real search phrases.
That is real SEO.
And that is why the reel didn’t just go viral once.
Even after months, it still gets views because it ranks for an evergreen search.
People will always search for meal prep.
Just like people always search for how to lose belly fat, morning routines, or how to get more clients.
Find Your Evergreen Entry Points
This brings us to the next step.
Finding evergreen entry points for your content.
Why Evergreen Content Matters
Ideally, people find your content through SEO optimized posts.
Then they stay for your other content because they like what you share.
So the question is:
How do you find evergreen entry points in your niche?
Instagram doesn’t directly give you a full list of search phrases.
TikTok also removed many search suggestion features.
So you can’t fully depend on platforms to give you ideas.
3 Ways to Find Evergreen Topics
But you still have three reliable ways.
First, check your own analytics.
Go into Instagram Insights and see which reels brought the most non-follower reach.
Look at:
- First 3 seconds
- Captions
- Topic
Instagram is already showing you what works.
Second, use external tools.
Answerthepublic.com and Google autocomplete are great.
For example, type meal prep.
You’ll see phrases like:
meal prep breakfast ideas
meal prep for weight loss
These are strong evergreen entry points.
Third, reverse engineer ranked content.
Search your topic on Instagram.
Look at top-performing reels.
Study the captions and hashtags they use.
That gives you strong clues about what works.
Using SEO To Find Your Target Audience
Now look at the bigger picture.
Every keyword is more than a search phrase.
It is a problem statement.
Understand Search Intent
For example:
How to lose belly fat = someone wants weight loss help.
How to save money fast = someone needs financial help.
How to get coaching clients = someone wants business growth.
Every search tells you what problem people want solved.
That is why SEO is much bigger than optimization.
It gives endless content ideas.
Create Content as a Solution
Your job as a creator is simple.
Turn your content into the solution.
Make videos around problems your audience already has.
Then you stop guessing what to post.
Instead, you create content people are already searching for.
That makes your content more targeted and more valuable.
SEO helps people discover you.
But good content keeps them watching and turns them into followers, customers, or buyers.
Optimize Your Profile for Better SEO
By the way, captions and hashtags are only one part of Instagram SEO.
Instagram also indexes your profile bio, your highlights, and even the words in your script transcript.
That means every line you write matters.
Every word you say matters.
Even the text on your screen matters.
Your Profile Matters Too
Most creators completely ignore this.
But all of these things help Instagram understand your content better.
So if you want the extra reach from SEO to actually help your growth, your profile also needs to be optimized.
Your bio should clearly explain:
- Who you help
- What content you share
- Why people should follow you
Your highlights should also support your profile and make things easy for new visitors.
Turn Visitors Into Followers
SEO can help people discover your content.
But discovery alone is not enough.
Once people visit your profile, the goal is to turn them into followers or buyers.
That is why profile optimization is so important.
Good SEO brings people in.
A strong profile helps convert them.
